WASHINGTON, DC –Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, CA), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation issued the following statement in response to testimony about the Jones Act at a joint hearing to examine maritime nuclear smuggling threats and other risks to port security:

“At today’s hearing, members of both the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation and the Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security heard testimony on how we can best defend against nuclear smuggling threats.

Today, Congressman Garamendi took his fight to stop the twin tunnels to the floor of the House, offering an amendment that would have barred any federal support for the project. Congressman McNerney followed suit with his own amendment in the same vein.

In a spirited debate with his colleagues from the San Joaquin Valley and Southern California, Garamendi attacked the argument for the tunnels. “The tunnels are a deadly threat to the Delta and a wasteful boondoggle costing more than $15 billion while not creating one gallon of new water,” said Garamendi.
