Congressman John Garamendi’s Statement on McCarthy Withdrawal
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, CA) issued the following statement in response to Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s sudden withdrawal from the race for House Speaker:
“McCarthy’s shocking admission about the political intentions of the Select Committee on Benghazi obviously did not help his cause, but the real problem is that the Republican Caucus is hopelessly divided. Until the majority can unify behind a single legislative strategy, the House will continue to lurch from crisis to crisis, rather than accomplishing the work the American people tasked us to do. The clock is ticking on three important legislative issues: the infrastructure bill, the debt ceiling, and a bill to fund the government. We are getting closer every day to the December expiration of the Continuing Resolution that’s keeping the government open, and I am very worried about what might happen to our economy and the hardworking Americans who expect and depend on a functioning government. These are dangerous and uncertain times in Washington.”
