“I congratulate Rep. Paul Ryan on his election to the Speaker of the House, and I appreciated the inclusive message that he delivered in his first address as Speaker. He now has an opportunity to fix a broken institution by ending cycles of chaos fueled by manufactured crises. I am cautiously optimistic. Yesterday, he joined Speaker Boehner, a third of the Republican Caucus, and the entirety of the Democratic Caucus to pass a long-term budget compromise that honors the full faith and credit of the United States and avoids yet another protracted fight over Congress’ basic responsibilities. Speaker Ryan has a tough job ahead of him, and for the sake of every American who expects and deserves a functioning government, I sincerely wish him all the best.”
