The loss of life in the flotilla incident was tragic, and I look forward to the findings of the recently formed Independent Public Commission, which will examine such issues as the naval blockade of Gaza, actions taken by the Commandos during flotilla incident, and the identities and conduct of the organizers and participants of the flotilla. In the mean time, we must focus on avoiding escalation, preventing more violence, and continuing the peace process. The greatest tragedy would be to allow the flotilla incident to end the region’s prospects for peace.

"Over the coming months, seniors who fall into the Medicare Part D donut hole will receive $250 rebate checks in the mail," Congressman Garamendi explained. "BP told us their platform was leaking 5,000 barrels of oil a day. Once again, BP was wrong, and they should be held accountable for the mess they’ve made," Congressman Garamendi said. "It is now projected that the Gulf Coast oil disaster is the equivalent to one Exxon-Valdez oil spill a week. We are left with one unshakable conclusion; platform drilling is simply too dangerous."

Garamendi added, "Checks are in the mail to provide relief to millions of seniors trapped in the Medicare Part D prescription drug donut hole. With $250 this year, a 50 percent discount on name brand prescription drugs next year, and the complete closure of the donut hole by 2020, seniors are getting the financial relief they deserve from health care reform. To those who want to repeal health care reform, I have only one question, 'Which senior’s check do you want to take away first?'"

A congressman from the East Bay, Rep. John Garamendi, D-Walnut Grove, said it's possible the NUMMI factory could be used for more than electric vehicles. After all, the auto factory measures about 5.4 million square feet.

The COMPETES Act renews important investments in scientific research, while the American Jobs, Closing Tax Loopholes and Preventing Outsourcing Act extends tax relief, funds government programs, extends essential benefits, and closes tax loopholes.

In Oregon it’s over $1 billion annually and some 17,000 are employed. In Washington, 150,000 people and over $8 billion. We value that economic activity as much as we value the precious coastline, the fishing, and the other opportunities it presents to us."

"The National Defense Authorization Act takes needed steps to protect and assist our men and women in uniform," said Representative Garamendi. "This bill includes a 1.9 percent pay raise for our troops, extends TRICARE health coverage to the children of military families up to the age of 26, provides necessary armor and protective vehicles to troops in combat, adds significant safeguards to protect female soldiers from sexual assault, modernizes DOD schools, and increases the maximum amount of hostile fire and imminent danger pay available to our soldiers."
