"Today I flew back to California to make it clear to state and federal lawmakers where I stand: the 9,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) conveyance facility being proposed could wreak havoc on the Delta and the jobs it sustains and put existing water rights in the Delta and Northern California at risk," said Congressman John Garamendi. "It is possible for California to solve its water problems, but the Delta and Northern California counties must be at the table, and it will take a comprehensive, multifaceted approach, not just a piece of plumbing in the Delta. We must address the needs of all Californians by prioritizing storage, conservation, recycling, levee improvements, and habitat restoration. A BDCP without these elements is incomplete at best."

"I was proud to vote for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, because as California’s first elected Insurance Commissioner, I know all too well that without a referee leveling the playing field, the insurance industry will always put its profits ahead of the people it is supposed to serve. We have a moral obligation to help people. Commonsense reforms in the Affordable Care Act, including those found in the Patient’s Bill of Rights, not only improve care for millions of Americans, but they also reduce costs in the overall health system, helping us responsibly reduce the deficit."

"When families are struggling here at home, we shouldn't spend money on things we don't need, and we do not need to be further padding the budget for the Afghanistan war," said Garamendi.

"The BDCP process is heading toward the creation of a massive water diversion facility that could destroy the entire Delta," said Congressman John Garamendi (CA-10). "The only protection against this catastrophe is existing water rights and environmental laws at the federal and state levels, which the House of Representatives has already voted to completely overturn with the disastrous HR 1837. Instead of moving headlong on this dangerous course, we must develop an overarching water vision for California that includes critical improvements for the Delta's levee infrastructure, coupled with increased water recycling, conservation, and storage."

"I should be saying today that the House of Representatives voted for a good bipartisan jobs bill to get Americans back to work … but I can’t. The Republican leadership in Congress would rather waste time on meaningless theater than do something about jobs," Congressman Garamendi said. "Yet again, they scheduled a vote to allow 17 million children with pre-existing conditions to once again be denied coverage and to raise prescription drug costs for more than five million seniors."

"I’ve always seen transit as an interconnected statewide priority. We should be working together to develop transit solutions helping all California communities," Congressman Garamendi said. "At a minimum, we should have the transit needs of the communities we represent in mind. I don’t understand why Congressman Jeff Denham is leading the fight to imperil transit priorities in his district and mine."

"This compromise was essential. If we didn’t act, 7.4 million students would have effectively seen a $1,000 tax increase every year they took out Stafford Loans," said Congressman Garamendi. "As someone who voted against every tuition increase as a UC Regent and CSU Trustee, college affordability has always been a top priority for me. I’m glad this time Congress was able to put partisanship aside to help our students."

"We all deserve the freedom from want and the freedom from fear. While I hope to eventually see Medicare for All in America, the Affordable Care Act is a vast improvement over the dark days when we allowed the insurance companies to run roughshod over our health."
