Washington, DC—Today, Congressman Garamendi, Ranking Member of the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee, met with the new head of the Maritime Administration, Rear Admiral Mark Buzby. They strategized about recapitalization of the Military Sealift Command and Ready Reserve Force fleets, the importance of education and training opportunities to ensure an adequate pool of capable and credentialed mariners, and ways to improve the Title XI maritime loan guarantee program to spur domestic manufacturing through the building of more ships on U.S. soil.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today Rep. John Garamendi (D-CA) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) introduced the bipartisan Student Loan Refinancing and Recalculating Act, H.R. 4001, to address the ballooning student loan debt crisis in America that cripples over 40 million Americans and their families.
The total student loan debt in America has reached $1.3 trillion, and over $875 billion of it is held by the federal government at interest rates of up to 6.84%. That percentage far exceeds the market rate for most government loans.
