The Congressmen asked the Coast Guard to reactivate the Polar Sea icebreaker in a letter to Commandant Paul Zukunft. The U.S. currently does not have the icebreakers it needs to meet its responsibilities in the Arctic. Putting the Polar Sea back into service would better enable the U.S. to secure its national security, environmental and economic interests in the region.

"Today, the House of Representatives stood unified that we will not rush into a third Gulf War," Congressman Garamendi said, "The Constitution gives Congress the right and obligation to give advice and consent before waging war. I have serious doubts about waging any military campaign in Iraq, and clearly I am not alone."

"Before we ever consider sending our brave men and women in uniform back into the Iraq powder keg, we owe it to our servicemembers and to the American people to at least have a frank and public debate in the Halls of Congress," Armed Services Committee Member Garamendi said.

“While I always welcome news of servicemembers returning home from Afghanistan, I remain deeply concerned about the scope and length of our continued military involvement in Afghanistan beyond 2014.

“The Airmen at Beale and Travis Air Force Bases depend on Congress to pass good legislation that ensures they can effectively and safely carry out their missions. The NDAA also improves Congressional services for veterans, helps veterans who are seeking employment, and supports veterans who are struggling with mental illness. This legislation is far from perfect, but it’s a strong foundation,” said Congressman Garamendi.

"On issues as global as wasteful spending in our nuclear weapons program to as local as supporting a thriving arts scene, Davis is driven to make things better," Garamendi said.
