March 1, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA), returned Peace Corps volunteer (Ethiopia 1966-1968) and co-chair of the Congressional Peace Corps Caucus, reintroduced the "Peace Corps Reauthorization Act." The reintroduction coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Peace Corps' founding by President John F. Kennedy, and the start of National Peace Corps Week.

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA-03) voted to pass the "American Rescue Plan" (H.R. 1319), which passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 219-212. The legislation includes much-needed relief to re-open schools, distribute vaccinations in every American community, send an additional $1,400 stimulus check to individuals, support small businesses, and extend unemployment benefits.

Washington, DC – Today, Rep. John Garamendi (D-CA) voted to pass the Heroes Act, legislation to address the continued public health crisis and provide desperately needed support for struggling families and essential workers. The bill passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 208-199. The legislation includes funds for testing and tracing measures, key support for frontline workers, and strengthened assistance for the American people. Rep. Garamendi also released a new detailed estimate of the direct benefits that the Heroes Act would provide to California and local communities.

Washington, DC—Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA) voted for two bipartisan appropriations bills to fund the federal government through the 2020 fiscal year. The $1.4 trillion spending deal funds nearly aspect of the federal government and includes $25 million in long-sought funding for critical research into gun violence at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health. The legislation is expected to be signed into law later this week.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Rep. John Garamendi (D-CA) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) reintroduced the bipartisan Student Loan Refinancing and Recalculation Act, H.R. 1899, to address the ballooning student loan debt crisis in America that cripples over 40 million Americans and their families.

The total student loan debt in America has reached $1.5 trillion, and over $875 billion of it is held by the federal government at interest rates of up to 6.84%. That percentage far exceeds the market rate for most government loans.

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA) reintroduced the American Food for American Schools Act (H.R.1066) to strengthen "Buy American" requirements under the National School Lunch Program, with Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) as the original cosponsor. The Congressmen's bipartisan bill would also increase transparency so that parents are informed when students are served foreign-produced foods paid for by taxpayers.
