Garamendi Discusses the American Rescue Plan’s Support for Local Schools

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Congressman Garamendi (D-CA) hosted an education roundtable with county school superintendents from every part of his Congressional District to discuss the $14 billion in funding for California schools in "The American Rescue Plan."

Garamendi was joined by Colusa County Superintendent Mike West, Glenn County Superintendent Tracey Quarne, Lake County Superintendent Brock Falkenberg, Sacramento County Superintendent David Gordon, Sonoma County Superintendent Dr. Lisette Estrella-Henderson, Sutter County Superintendent Tom Reusser, Yolo County Superintendent Garth Lewis, and Yuba County Superintendent Dr. Francisco Reveles.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a massive toll on students, parents, and teachers alike," Congressman Garamendi said. "As the COVID-19 pandemic began, parents and students needed to adapt to virtual learning. We have witnessed the burdens this has had on families struggling to make ends meet while also prioritizing their children's educational growth. For students and teachers, virtual learning has come with its own challenges—ranging from internet connectivity issues to concerns about childhood development.

"Thankfully, the American Rescue Plan—which President Biden signed into law today—includes much-needed funding to safely re-open schools and address lost time in the classroom. This includes dedicated funding for school districts in every corner of my Congressional District to meet their needs and ensure they can continue providing a strong education to their students," Garamendi continued.

"I greatly appreciate the wisdom and insight that today's roundtable participants brought to the conversation. Getting 3rd District children safely back in school is a top priority of mine in Congress, and I look forward to working with county superintendents to ensure that this transition is as smooth as possible," Garamendi concluded.
