The bill includes $8.7 billion to maintain America’s nuclear weapons stockpile, $526 million more than FY 2015. Garamendi fears this increase in spending to support our already bloated nuclear weapons program, particularly in the context of delicate diplomacy with Iran and Russia, could trigger a chain reaction that would accelerate a modern nuclear arms race.

"The changes to the BDCP just confirm our fear that this project is not about restoring the environment,” Congressman Garamendi said.

Garamendi introduced a number of amendments to inform Congress about the costs and risks of our new nuclear arms race.

“This legislation strengthens the Coast Guard’s ability to protect our nation and safeguard maritime commerce. It does so by providing budget stability and funds to address the many unmet capital project needs of the Coast Guard.”

The Congressman brought together experts and dozens of accomplished women in business, non-profits, and public service. He said, "In America today, women are taking their rightful place as equals at home, at work, and in the community, but as everyone in this room knows, we haven’t broken the glass ceiling yet."

Garamendi hosted a press conference in Davis to urge the implementation of stronger safety standards for hazardous material transported by rail, especially Bakken crude oil.

"From land navigation on cell phones to a timing source for our national infrastructure, we need a reliable backup system to GPS," Garamendi said.

Today, we came together, not as Democrats or Republicans but as Americans, to uphold our obligation to society’s most vulnerable citizens, including our seniors, children in lower-income families, and Americans who live in rural underserved communities.
