WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Rep. John Garamendi (D-CA) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) reintroduced the bipartisan Student Loan Refinancing and Recalculation Act, H.R. 1899, to address the ballooning student loan debt crisis in America that cripples over 40 million Americans and their families.

The total student loan debt in America has reached $1.5 trillion, and over $875 billion of it is held by the federal government at interest rates of up to 6.84%. That percentage far exceeds the market rate for most government loans.

WASHINGTON, DC-Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA) introduced H.R. 1553, the Fair COLA for Seniors Act of 2019. This bill would require Social Security to use the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E) to calculate a fairer cost of living adjustment (COLA)for seniors. The bill would increase benefits and ensure that cost of living adjustments in Social Security reflect the real rising costs for seniors and disabled Americans. From 1982 to 2011, CPI-E rose at an annual average rate of 3.1 percent, compared with 2.9 percent for the methods that are currently used.

Rep. John Garamendi, D-Solano, introduced the Sites Reservoir Protection Act Thursday to provide federal support for the building of Sites Reservoir and other water infrastructures in the Central Valley.

The act, also known as House Resolution 1453, would direct the Bureau of Reclamation to complete a feasibility study for the project Colusa and Glenn counties. The proposed reservoir aims to provide 1.8 million acre-feet of off-stream water storage capacity for California and help local communities prepare for droughts, according to a news release.
