"In the 21st century, America faces at least three challenges that will shape the destiny of our great nation: the rising influence of oil states that don’t share our interests or values; the growing ecological crisis caused by climate change; and the continuing decline of the manufacturing sector that created our middle class," Congressman Garamendi explained. "Five police officers are patrolling Fairfield’s streets today, keeping us safe, because of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act," said Congressman Garamendi. "Congress and President Obama understood that in a downturned economy, action was required to preserve public safety and get people back to work. From our police to our schools to our roads, ARRA delivered hundreds of thousands of jobs throughout California, helping to prevent the worst ravages of the Great Recession and setting our economy on a more stable footing."

"The Highway 4 Widening Project is a win, win, win for the Bay Area. It means thousands of new jobs, less congestion, and improved public transit access. Federal, state, and local government officials worked together to secure the necessary $165.4 million for this project."

On Friday, Congressman John Garamendi (Walnut Creek, CA), voted for H.R. 5116, the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act, and H.R. 4213, the American Jobs, Closing Tax Loopholes and Preventing Outsourcing Act. The COMPETES Act renews important investments in scientific research, while the American Jobs, Closing Tax Loopholes and Preventing Outsourcing Act extends tax relief, funds government programs, extends essential benefits, and closes tax loopholes.

"The March jobs report is encouraging. More Americans were hired last month than in any month over the past three years. While we are not out of the wilderness yet, our economic footing is secure and we are on our way to a bright, prosperous day. But our work is not done.
