"Our public schools are the incubators of the next generation of Californians. We must continue to invest in education and our nation's future," said Congressman Garamendi, a former University of California regent and California State University trustee. "Multiple studies have shown one consistent rule in education reform: class size matters. Every teacher we layoff harms hundreds of students who suffer from reduced individual attention. This $487 million from ARRA will help California avoid more drastic cuts."

"With every teacher we lay off, hundreds of students face larger class sizes and less individual attention – and all the studies show that these are among the most important variables in determining the success of our students," Congressman Garamendi said. "Today, I was proud to join my Democratic colleagues in the House to stand with our teachers and students, because the prosperity of our great nation depends on a well-educated workforce."

"The Recovery Act kept more than 400,000 teachers in the classroom, but now that much of that money is running out, our schools need a booster shot," said Congressman John Garamendi, a former University of California regent and California State University trustee.

"The House set aside $10 billion in the supplemental for our teachers and schools. It’s my hope that the Senate can set aside partisanship for the sake of our kids and pass a supplemental with education funding intact."

On Friday, Congressman John Garamendi (Walnut Creek, CA), voted for H.R. 5116, the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act, and H.R. 4213, the American Jobs, Closing Tax Loopholes and Preventing Outsourcing Act. The COMPETES Act renews important investments in scientific research, while the American Jobs, Closing Tax Loopholes and Preventing Outsourcing Act extends tax relief, funds government programs, extends essential benefits, and closes tax loopholes.

"I want to commend Adarsha, Apoorva, and Callie for their ongoing work on Project Jatropha. Unhindered by their young age and the scale of the problem, these students are courageously working to combat global warming. They approach this serious challenge with humility and youthful excitement."

"There are some priorities that are too important to be derailed by partisan machinations, our nation’s investments in science research and education among them," said Congressman Garamendi. "When the COMPETES Authorization Act was passed with broad bipartisan support and signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2007, Congress appropriately demonstrated that our global competitiveness remains an important priority. A scant three years later, with COMPETES coming up for reauthorization, Republicans in the House are now demonstrating that they’d rather score cheap partisan 'victories' than demonstrate real leadership."

"Major scientific breakthroughs occur every year at the Livermore labs, and it’s important that we harness these advances to strengthen our economy, create jobs, and improve our way of life," said Congressman Garamendi. “My bill creates a technology transfer center at the Lawrence Livermore and Sandia labs, making it easier for private sector companies and universities to convert ideas into employment engines."

"Livermore’s National Ignition Facility may be on the cusp of developing the next great clean energy advance: fusion power," Congressman Garamendi said. "As their research brings us closer to a fusion powered future, we must prepare for the commercial development of this technology. Our amendment makes sure that once fusion technology is harnessed, we will put it to work creating clean energy and green jobs as soon as possible."
