"None of us would be here today at this worksite if it weren’t for the $197.5 million that came from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for this project," Congressman Garamendi said. "The Caldecott Tunnel’s fourth bore project will create 5,000 to 6,000 new jobs and ease traffic congestion for Bay Area commuters."

"The public is sick and tired of robber barons guarding the gates of our economy," said Congressman Garamendi, who as California’s insurance commissioner for eight years, regulated the country’s largest financial sector.

Today's announcement that the unemployment rate dropped in November is welcomed news for the millions of American workers, including tens of thousands of people in my district, struggling to find a job in this difficult economy. The Recovery Act and other jobs-creating measures have laid down the building blocks to repair our economy.

"People are struggling in this economy, and I will continue to do all I can to create the jobs we need to bring financial security to all hardworking families," said Congressman Garamendi, former chair of the California Commission for Economic Development. I've spent eight years as your representative as Insurance Commissioner, and during that period of time, I had as my task the regulation of the insurance companies. And there are numerous problems in the private health insurance system today. Things such as what we call cherry-picking. If you have an illness or if you happen to be at the age of 55, you don't get insurance, because you have a pre-existing condition or you might become ill and expensive. There's such a thing as post-event underwriting, so if you present yourself at a doctor or hospital and the insurance company comes back later and says, "Oh my, we can't cover that because you didn't fill out the form properly and didn't tell us you had acne when you were a teenager." Now that happens to be a real story, a real fact.

"It’s about jobs, and that's what I really want to focus on here," Rep. Garamendi said. "We know that job creation is no accident; it requires a sustained commitment to research and education, particularly career technical education. When Livermore’s national labs, schools, private employers, and government agencies work together to repair our struggling economy, we can move our region forward and create the jobs we need."

"Small businesses are the lifeblood of the American economy, and with the passage of these three bills, we can continue the important work of moving our economy forward with job creation," said Rep. Garamendi, former chair of the California Commission for Economic Development. "Small businesses have generated 64 percent of all net new jobs over the past 15 years, and with the passage of these good business-friendly bills, small business owners will find it a little easier to continue their important contributions to our nation."
