The House Republican continuing resolution cuts threaten to stifle job creation by gutting key investments. Instead of moving America forward, the GOP budget proposal would put this country in reverse. Under the House Republican plan, more than 200,000 children would be kicked out of Head Start and thousands of teachers would lose their jobs; 20,000 fewer researchers would be supported at the National Science Foundation, stifling the innovative research that creates next generation jobs; 25,000 new construction jobs would be lost and 76 projects in 40 states would be cancelled; there would be 1,330 fewer cops on the beat and 2,400 fewer firefighters on the job; AmeriCorps' effective services to our country would be eliminated; and needed food programs like WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) would be decimated.

"I congratulate the Egyptian people for their resolve, courage, and determination to end a thirty year undemocratic system. President Mubarak’s resignation today is a major step toward democracy, but it does not complete the task. We should encourage the military, which is now in control, to set out a path to achieve free, transparent, and open elections no later than the current September schedule. There must be an immediate end to any and all laws that prevent the development of viable political parties and a process that encourages moderate and progressive parties to emerge. At this moment, 'We are all Egyptians.'"

Garamendi added, "House Republicans want to decimate water cleanup, making your tap water more toxic. They want to drastically cut funding to the FBI and U.S. Marshals, making our streets less safe. They want to cut billions from clean energy production and research, eliminating hundreds of thousands of jobs, making America less competitive, and endangering national security by continuing our dangerous addiction to foreign oil. They want to close national parks and layoff park rangers, possibly making your favorite vacation spot a haven for criminals. Every American is harmed by this destructive and foolish plan."

"Egypt has a proud and rich history as a leader in the Middle East, and the Egyptian people now have an opportunity to once again lead the way – this time toward an open and free democracy," said Congressman Garamendi. "The people of Egypt deserve self-determination, the ability to choose their own leaders. There must be a period of transition before elections can occur, and I urge the government, the military, and opposition factions to respect human rights and renounce violence. America will work with the democratically elected leaders of Egypt to ensure regional stability and security."

Patti and I are sad to learn of Sargent Shriver's passing. Our lives were shaped, inspired, and improved by the extraordinary vision and talent of Sargent Shriver when he built the Peace Corps. We had the awesome experience to join the Peace Corps in its third year and to be assigned to Ethiopia. Were it not for Shriver's leadership, this iconic and pure American program would never exist.
