Press Release

Washington, DC—Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA), Co-Chair of the American Sikh Caucus, delivered remarks at the Sikh Council on Religion and Education’s event in Washington to honor Guru Nanak–the founder of Sikhism. Last year, Garamendi introduced a resolution to honor Guru Nanak’s teachings and contributions to society.

“Today, I spoke before the Sikh Council on Religion and Education’s summit in Washington to honor the birth of Guru Nanak—and to recognize the contributions of Sikh Americans,” Garamendi said.

“I am fortunate to represent one of the largest Sikh populations in the United States. When I travel across our district and work with the Sikh community, I see how they embody Guru Nanak’s teachings of promoting peace, equality, and goodness,” Garamendi continued.

“Our community remembers the devastating Camp Fire in 2018, which destroyed 18,000 structures and claimed 85 lives,” Garamendi continued.

“Immediately, the Sikh community stepped up to assist during this tragedy. They provided food, shelter, and supplies to victims and donated food to firefighters. They worked closely with local governments and volunteer groups to ensure that every member of the community received proper care during unimaginable hardship,” Garamendi continued.

“These actions exemplify the teachings of Guru Nanak and the compassion of the Sikh community. It is an honor to be here with you all today and, as Co-Chair of the American Sikh Caucus, it is an honor to represent the vast community of Sikh Americans,” Garamendi concluded.
