Reps. Garamendi and Costa Introduce Resolution Honoring Founder of Sikhism

November 12, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, American Sikh Caucus Co-Chair Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA) and Congressman Jim Costa (D-CA) introduced a resolution (H.Res. 689) recognizing Guru Nanak—the founder of Sikhism—on the 550th anniversary of his birth:

"America's founding ideals of freedom of worship, equality, and justice are reflected in the Sikh American community and its celebration of Guru Nanak—the founder of Sikhism. Guru Nanak taught that everyone is equal regardless of caste, creed or gender and his teachings are carried out today in the 30 million Sikhs worldwide. As the Representative of one of the largest Sikh communities in America, and as a Co-Chair of the American Sikh Caucus, I am proud to introduce this resolution to honor Guru Nanak and recognize the contributions Sikhism has made to our world," said Garamendi.

"Guru Nanak is one of history's great leaders. His message of peace, equality and service to others inspires us all to become better human beings," said Rep. Costa. "On this 550th anniversary of his birth, it is important to reflect on the many contributions and accomplishments of Sikhs all around the world. My own district is home to a vibrant Sikh community that lives by the values he taught every day. This resolution reminds us of how Guru Nanak's message resonates in our world today," said Costa.
