Garamendi Commends Passage of Veterans’ Compensation Act As Troops Return Home, Bill Will Increase Disability Compensation for American Heroes

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield), a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, today stood with veterans by voting for the Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2011, S. 894. The bill would increase compensation payments for disabled veterans and their families by 3.6 percent. The bill now heads to the White House for the President’s signature.

Congressman Garamendi said the following:

"Every day, veterans who have fought valiantly for our country overseas return home and have to fight for a job and a home to live in.

"This bill, which increases the rates of disability compensation for veterans, comes as much needed relief for many veterans who are struggling to get by during these trying times.

"While this bill is welcomed, we can do better in fulfilling our obligation to these brave men and women. Over 877,000 American veterans are unemployed, through no fault of their own. I call on my colleagues in Congress to do more. President Obama’s American Jobs Act offers companies smart incentives to hire veterans, and it deserves passage right now."

The American Jobs Act includes a new Returning Heroes Tax Credit of up to $5,600 for firms that hire out-of-work veterans and a Wounded Warriors Tax Credit of up to $9,600 for firms that hire veterans with service-related disabilities.

Leading up to Veterans Day on November 11, Congressman John Garamendi will host a Veterans Resources Fair on Thursday, November 10 at Dixon High School, 555 College Way in Dixon, Calif. The Congressman hopes that all veterans and their family members will attend to learn about additional services for which they may be eligible.
