Congressman Garamendi’s Statement on the Terrorist Attack in Brussels

March 24, 2016
Press Release

FAIRFIELD, CA - Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, Davis, Yuba City, CA) issued the following statement in response to this week’s terrorist bombing in Brussels, Belgium:

“Local forces in Iraq and Syria, backed by coalition training and equipment, are making steady progress in eroding ISIS’ capabilities. But Tuesday’s deplorable bombing in Brussels makes clear that they are still a threat at home and abroad. A month ago, as part of my duties on the House Armed Services Committee, I traveled to Paris and Brussels to meet with key ministers of our NATO allies to discuss how we can improve security cooperation and defend against terrorism. These conversations are now especially relevant.”

“As ISIS continues to stagnate locally in the face an aggressive American air campaign and ground pressure from coalition forces, they will likely become more reliant on terrorism to scare Europe and the United States into giving up the fight. That will never happen. Neither the United States nor our European allies will falter in the face of terrorism and the murder of innocent civilians.”

“I join all Americans in grieving for Belgium and the people of Brussels, just as we did for Paris and San Bernardino a few months ago. Americans are understandably worried about the safety of their families and communities, but our response must not only be strong—it must also be smart and steady. It will involve stepping up our air campaign and support for our allies on the ground against ISIS. It will require developing a more nimble and agile response to the transnational threat of terrorism posed by ISIS. And it will require strengthening our alliances and intelligence-gathering with our partners in Europe, Africa and the Middle East to disrupt terrorist plots wherever they are being developed.”

“We must be vigilant, but we must also not overreact and be goaded into actions that will cost even more American lives and eventually make us less safe. I am confident that with a strong, steady and smart approach, we can defeat ISIS where they are and defend ourselves and our allies against attacks here at home.”
