Congressman Garamendi’s Statement on President Obama’s Nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court

March 16, 2016

“Judge Merrick Garland is the chief judge of the District of Columbia Circuit Court, making him exceptionally well qualified to serve on the Supreme Court. He is universally thought to possess a restrained judicial temperament, and he was overwhelmingly confirmed by the Senate to his current position,” said Congressman Garamendi. “The American people deserve to learn more about Judge Garland through confirmation hearings, but Senate leadership has refused to act.”

“The Constitution is clear: The President has the responsibility to nominate a candidate, and the Senate has the responsibility to schedule a hearing and a vote, regardless of when the next election is. I urge the Senate to fulfill its obligation under the Constitution and give Judge Garland the fair confirmation process he and the American people deserve.”
