Congressman Garamendi Proud to Announce Finalists for 10th Congressional District’s Military Service Academy Nominations

February 2, 2011

FAIRFIELD, CA – Congressman John Garamendi (D-Walnut Creek, CA), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, today is proud to announce the names of thirty high school students whom he has nominated to attend one of the nation’s military service academies.

The academies, which include The United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, and the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, are amongst the most prestigious universities in the country. They have a long standing tradition of excellence in education, service and integrity.

"After meeting many of these impressive young men and women, I’m confident that America’s military will be in good hands when today’s cadets become tomorrow’s top military leaders," Congressman Garamendi said. "I salute our 2011 finalists, thank them for their desire to serve our country, and look forward to watching their rise in the military."

The young men and women competing for nominations this year include an outstanding group of individuals. While all applicants demonstrated the dedication, courage and aptitude necessary to excel at an academy, only the most qualified individuals are able to receive a nomination each year. Nominations are based on a "whole person" evaluation. Applicants must demonstrate academic strength, involvement in extra-curricular activities, leadership skills, physical aptitude, moral character and a desire to serve their country as a member of the United States Military.

Representative Garamendi strives to nominate high-caliber young men and women of all backgrounds to attend the academies. Residents who know a high school student who is interested in applying for next year can contact Brandon Minto in Rep. Garamendi’s Fairfield office at 707-438-1822 or visit https://www.garamendi.hosue.gov and click “services” for more information.
