Congressman Garamendi on Prop 8 Ruling: "California is a Freer, More Just Place Today"
WALNUT CREEK, CA – Congressman John Garamendi (D-Walnut Creek, CA) today issued the following statement after Judge Vaughn Walker ruled Proposition 8, the initiative that banned marriage equality in California, unconstitutional:
"California is a freer, more just place today. By overturning Proposition 8, Justice Vaughn Walker affirmed a basic American value: we all deserve to be treated fairly under the law, and we all deserve the freedom to marry.
"Marriage is an institution that outwardly demonstrates the love partners share, and it preserves healthy family bonds. Same-sex couples simply want the basic dignity and security that comes with equal access to marriage, and the nearly 300,000 children in America raised by gay and lesbian couples deserve every protection our society provides to married families.
"Today’s ruling is not the end of the fight for equality. There will be more appeals and more debate. True marriage equality may take years or even decades, but I am confident that the wisdom of time will shine favorably on those who stand with equality."
