Congressman Garamendi on February Jobs Report

March 5, 2010
Press Release

Democratic Economic Policies Averted the Complete Collapse of our
Economy, More Work Needs to be Done, Garamendi Says

WALNUT CREEK, CA – Congressman John Garamendi (D-Walnut Creek, CA) today issued the following statement after the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released their February jobs report showing that the jobless rate remained steady at 9.7 percent in February:

"Almost all economists agree that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and other jobs bills approved by President Obama and Congressional Democrats prevented the complete collapse our economy last year. Nevertheless, no one should be content with an economy hovering near double digit unemployment.

"Congress must aggressively pursue jobs bills that will create employment opportunities in the short term while leaving lasting infrastructure, efficiencies, and safety improvements for decades to come. It is also essential that we get a bill on the President’s desk that makes it easier for small business owners to attain the loans they need to hire new workers.

"The House’s vote on the HIRE Act yesterday is an important step on the road to recovery, creating an estimated 300,000 jobs through tax incentives while bringing billions of dollars to roads, bridges, and other transportation improvements. Frankly, it could have done more, but I’m not going to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Americans are still struggling, and I will do all I can to help turn out economy around, vote after vote, job after job.

"Considering our job loss numbers were ten times worse when President Obama inherited the Bush recession, today’s unemployment numbers show that the Democratic economic agenda is working."
