Travis in District is America’s Largest Air Force Base
FAIRFIELD, CA – Congressman John Garamendi (D-Walnut Creek, CA) today is proud to announce that he has been appointed to the House Armed Services Committee, an influential committee with jurisdiction over the Department of Defense and portions of the Department of Energy. Issues before the Committee include the United States Armed Forces, National Guard, pay and allowances, atomic energy, shipping, and war and national defense.
"It is an honor to represent Travis Air Force Base and the thousands of servicemen and women and veterans in my district in Congress, and with this appointment to the House Armed Services Committee, I will have an opportunity to better serve them," Congressman Garamendi said.
Rep. Garamendi represents Travis Air Force Base, home to the 60th Air Mobility Wing, which is the largest air mobility organization in the Air Force with a fleet of C-5 Galaxy, C-17 Globemaster III cargo aircraft and KC-10 Extender refueling aircraft, and is the largest employer in Solano County. The 10th Congressional District is home to thousands of active duty military personnel, veterans and their families. Garamendi also represents Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories, critical facilities safeguarding America’s nuclear arsenal.
"Congressman John Garamendi’s appointment to the House Armed Services Committee bodes well for Travis Air Force Base, the City of Fairfield and all of Northern California. The Congressman’s keen insight, as well as his awareness of critical services provided by both active duty and reserve wings at Travis bodes well for our communities," Fairfield Mayor Harry Price said. "Travis Air Force Base contributes in excess of $1.4 billion annually to this economy. Those jobs and services are much appreciated by the Fairfield –Suisun Chamber of Commerce, the Travis Armed Forces Committee and the economy of Northern California."
"Congressman Garamendi has been a friend to our veterans, active duty military, and their families," Solano County Supervisor Jim Spering said. "His placement on the House Armed Services Committee is good for Solano County and will ensure that the needs of Travis Air Force Base continue to be met."
"Travis Air Force Base is critical to the vibrancy and success of Solano County’s economy," Fairfield-Suisun Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Leslie Fay said. "I am very pleased that our Congressman, Rep. John Garamendi, now sits on the House Armed Services Committee, where he will be well-positioned to fight for one of the most important job creators in our county."
"On the committee, I will lend my perspective and voice on some of the most important issues of our time, including our role in conflicts oversees and defense spending priorities," added Garamendi, a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer. "I want everyone I represent to know that I will continue to pursue policies as I always have, with careful deliberation and a desire to create a safer, more just, and more peaceful world."
