Art Competition Winners Announced by Congressman Garamendi

July 11, 2011

Congressman John Garamendi (D-Walnut Creek, CA) has announced winners for the 2011 Congressional Art Competition. Students from across the 10th district submitted a total of 22 pieces of artwork. They employed a wide variety of mediums, including photography, digital work, acrylic, oils, pencil drawing, mixed media and collage. The three winners were selected by a panel of judges: Nancy Power-Meaden, Lorraine Thomas, and Joan Matsushima, who are artists at the Valley Art Gallery, and Kathy Nelson, the Art Education Program Manager for the City of Walnut Creek. The top finishers' artwork is below.

The panel selected Seo Hyung Lee of Moraga as the overall-winner. Ms. Lee received a free trip to Washington, D.C. to attend an awards ceremony on June 22. Her poster color painting, titled "Escape," will hang in the U.S. Capitol for an entire year.

"Thank you to all participants in this year's competition," said Congressman Garamendi. "This event demonstrates, once again, the remarkable intellectual and creative spirit of the students in our district. Congratulations to Tyler Oliver, Clay Sanders, and Seo Hyung Lee on placing in the competition. I wish to give a special congratulations to Ms. Lee, who has earned her spot in the nation's capital."
