Statement by Congressman John Garamendi on being named a Conferee to the National Defense Authorization Act
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, CA) issued the following statement in response to being named a Conferee to the Fiscal Year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act:
“I’m pleased to once again serve as a member of the Conference Committee to the National Defense Authorization Act, which provides the authority and direction for all United States military activities. The Conference Committee gives senior members of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees the opportunity to debate, amend, and send a final compromise bill to Congress and ultimately the President’s desk.”
“This is a $716 billion piece of legislation, and it does some things we all agree on, like giving our men and women in uniform a 2.6% pay raise—the largest in nearly a decade. But we still have crucial issues to resolve, including whether or not we will fund the Trump Administration’s dangerous quest for low-yield nuclear weapons. These destabilizing weapons increase the risk of a miscalculation that could lead to nuclear war, and I will fight to make sure we don’t go down that path.
“I will also do my part to ensure that the missions at Travis and Beale Air Force Bases back home in my district are fully supported in the final version that reaches the President’s desk.”
