Rep. Garamendi Hosts Town Hall for Local Farmers Impacted by Coronavirus
Sacramento, CA – Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA) hosted a virtual town hall for local farmers and food producers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Garamendi was joined by Karen Ross, Secretary of the California Department of Agriculture and Jamie Johansson, President of the California Farm Bureau to answer questions and hear the opinions of local farmers.
“The coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating impact on the agricultural sector throughout our nation. That’s why I advocated for and supported the $19 billion in emergency federal relief for farmers through USDA’s “Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP)—including $3 billion in direct USDA purchases for fresh produce," Garamendi said. “Now, food producers in every corner of my district who are fighting to stay above water need to know how they can get help. Their story is echoed by millions of small agricultural producers across this country. I convened a panel of experts to participate in today’s town hall. I wanted to listen to the needs and concerns of local producers, and provide information on how they can access the resources included in the recent coronavirus packages passed by Congress. I also wanted to hear their concerns and suggestions from farmers throughout my district so I can take their voices with me to Washington. I want to ensure that 3rd District producers get what they need to stay in business,” Garamendi continued.
“I appreciate every local producer that participated in today’s conversation, and I’m grateful to Secretary Ross and President Johansson for lending us their time and expertise today,” Garamendi concluded.
