Garamendi Visits Planned Parenthood in Richmond, California to Commemorate the 51st Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

January 23, 2024

RICHMOND, CA – Today, on what would have been the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Representative John Garamendi (D-CA08) visited the Planned Parenthood facility in Richmond, California to discuss the critical community services they provide.

“Planned Parenthood provides a wide range of health care services, including cancer screenings, primary care, and regular wellness check-ups. Since the Supreme Court's extremist conservative majority cruelly overturned Roe v. Wade, the Republican Party has inflicted a horrific agenda across the nation as they seek to criminalize women's health decisions. I thank providers at Planned Parenthood and reaffirm my commitment to supporting individual choice in personal health care decisions,” said Garamendi.

The overturning of Roe v. Wade has led to laws restricting women’s freedom in states around the country. These dangerous attacks threaten the health, lives, and well-being of Americans across the country. Health care providers practice in fear of criminal prosecution – leading to the delay and denial of life-saving care. Women who have been denied abortion care face a range of harmful outcomes, including an increase in household poverty, a greater likelihood of staying in contact with a violent partner, and a heightened risk of maternal death. These impacts also have a disproportionate effect on women of color, low-income women, young women, and members of the LGBTQ community, who too often lack the means to travel to obtain the care they need.

In Congress, Garamendi continues to fight against Republican-led attacks on women’s health freedom. Last week, Garamendi voted no on H.R. 6914 and H.R. 6918 which would have rolled back abortion access. Both bills failed to address the real needs of pregnant mothers and their families and instead attempted to harm the American people.
