Garamendi Statement on Texas Democrats Denying Quorum to Block Trump Redistricting

August 4, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman John Garamendi (CA-08) issued the following statement after Texas Democrats left the state to delay Donald Trump and Governor Greg Abbott’s redrawing of congressional districts:

“I am in full and unwavering support of Texas Democrats denying quorum to delay Governor Greg Abbott and Republicans' redrawing of the state’s congressional districts,” said Garamendi. “Texas Democrats have shown extraordinary courage and heroism in taking this necessary step to protect our democracy.

“It’s also rich to hear the crocodile tears from Attorney General Ken Paxton, who said that Texas Democrats were ‘cowards’ who should be hunted down, arrested, and brought back to the Capitol—when he himself fled his own home to dodge a subpoena and has faced several indictments for corruption not too long ago.

“Texas Democrats are the opposite of cowards – they are heroes. Remember, Governor Abbott and Paxton chose this path. They chose the unprecedented and authoritarian move to silence millions of voters. They chose this path because they, and Trump, know they will lose the midterms after choosing to steal benefits and healthcare from working Americans just to give their billionaire backers the largest tax cut in U.S. history. Keep fighting, Texas Democrats. I will always stand with you.”
