Garamendi Statement on FY25 CR

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, U.S. Representative John Garamendi (D-CA-08) released the following statement following the release of the Continuing Resolution (CR).  

“House Republicans at the order of Elon Musk and Donald Trump, torpedoed a bipartisan and bicameral deal that would have funded the government and provided much needed disaster relief to California communities. They replaced it with a one-sided scheme to grease the skids for a $2 trillion tax cut for wealthy billionaires.  

The bill before us was not negotiated or discussed in any way with the Democratic Leadership in the House, the Senate or the White House. Suspending the debt limit opens the door for Trump and the Republican Congress to pass a $2 trillion tax cut for the super wealthy that will explode the deficit.  

Let me be clear: we had a deal, but Elon Musk and Donald Trump killed it. House Republicans, one day before the government loses funding are trying to push through a bill that will provide a $2 trillion dollar tax cut for the super wealthy. Because of House Republicans refusal to pass the original bipartisan and bicameral bill to keep the government funded, they are putting our country on the brink of a government shutdown and setting the stage to explode the deficit with another tax cut for the super wealthy. This Trump-Musk shutdown isn’t just a political failure, it’s a callous attempted to give their super-wealthy donors a huge tax cut.    

Instead of working across the aisle to find common ground and protect the American people, these Republicans are bending to the will of Elon Musk and Trump, whose interests have nothing to do with the well-being of everyday Americans. Musk and Trump’s influence over House Republicans is crystal clear, and its hardworking families across America who will suffer the consequences.  

The choice is simple: Will Republicans stand with the American people, or will they continue to dance to the tune of billionaire puppet masters? It’s time for them to stop playing games, accept the original deal and start governing for the good of the country. Let’s hold them accountable before we all pay the price. The American people deserve better than this.”
