Garamendi Releases Statement Supporting Skilled Trade Unions in New Fight Against Unfair Chinese Trade Practices

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, U.S. Representative John Garamendi (D-CA08) issued the following statement in support of nearly a dozen skilled trade unions’, representing millions of American workers, petition to the Biden-Harris Administration’s U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai challenging the People’s Republic of China’s unfair trade practices in the Maritime, Logistics and Shipbuilding Sector:

“After years of simply playing defense, today, American workers in the U.S. shipbuilding industry went on the offense against heavily subsidized foreign shipyards and unfair trade practices by the People’s Republic of China. American workers in the maritime industry deserve nothing less than the full support of their federal government, and they have it in me and President Biden. After years of endless happy talk in Washington, President Biden and Congressional Democrats are finally turning free trade into fair trade, stopping foreign state-controlled companies from gutting our manufacturing jobs. Skilled American workers in our commercial shipyards are ready, willing, and able to do the job if given the chance. I applaud their union representatives taking on China by filing this trade petition.”
