Garamendi Releases Statement Supporting Skilled Trade Unions Investigation Unfair Chinese Trade Practices Actionable Under Section 301
WASHINGTON, DC—Today, U.S. Representative John Garamendi (D-CA-08) issued the following statement in support of nearly a dozen skilled trade unions, representing millions of American workers after Biden-Harris Administration’s U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai found that the People’s Republic of China’s targeted dominance in the Maritime, Logistics, and Shipbuilding Sector is “actionable” under Section 301:
“Today, I’m proud to stand with American workers in the U.S. shipbuilding and maritime industry as they fight the heavily subsidized foreign shipyards and unfair trade practices of the People’s Republic of China. For too long, American workers in the maritime industry have been hampered by unfair trade practices by the Chinese government. I’m proud that the federal government is stepping up to stop foreign state-controlled companies from gutting American manufacturing jobs and engaging in unfair practices. I have spent over ten years working to revitalize the U.S. maritime industry in order to strengthen our national economy, create good-paying American jobs, and support our national security during peacetime or war. Defending and supporting our underinvested maritime industry has been a key priority in my career – that’s why I, alongside Senator Kelly, Senator Young, and Representative Trent Kelly, introduced the SHIPS for America Act last year. Skilled American workers in our commercial shipyards are essential to supporting our economy and national security, and protecting the industry from dishonest actors is paramount. I applaud the union representatives as they continue fighting for American shipbuilding jobs.”
