Garamendi Issues Statement on the Removal of Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA) issued the following statement on the Republican Motion to Vacate the Chair:

“As Members of Congress, we have a solemn duty to uphold the Constitution, serve the American people, and defend the principle of good governance.

“Time and time again, my House Democratic colleagues and I have made clear our willingness to work across the aisle to seek a path forward. House Republicans have continually rejected these efforts and bent to the will of their extreme MAGA colleagues. 

“Over the weekend, House Democrats came together to pass a short-term spending bill to avoid a government shutdown. In response, MAGA Republicans have chosen to focus on their own extreme agenda and lead a Republican Conference revolt.

“The American people deserve a functional government that works for them. Unfortunately, my Republican colleagues have failed to uphold this expectation by allowing extremists to impose their partisan ideology. The majority of Americans do not support extreme MAGA policies. Former Speaker McCarthy proved that he was incapable of standing up to them on behalf of the American people.

“I and other House Democrats will continue to serve the American people and uphold our Constitutional duties.”
