Garamendi Issues Statement on the Election of Republican Speaker Mike Johnson

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA) issued the following statement on the election of Republican Speaker Mike Johnson:

“After 22 days of chaos among House Republicans that left Congress and the American people paralyzed, they have finally chosen to elect MAGA extremist Mike Johnson to Speaker of the House. In addition to pushing former President Trump’s plot to overturn the 2020 election, Speaker Johnson authored a nationwide abortion ban, proposed deep cuts to social security and Medicare benefits, and opposes LGBTQ+ rights.

“By electing Speaker Johnson, House Republicans have chosen a radical agenda that will hurt working families and undermine our democracy. House Democrats will continue to work for the American people, uphold the Constitution, and defend the principle of good governance.”
