Garamendi Hosts Local Events to Highlight Expanded Child Tax Credit Payments That Hit Bank Accounts Today
DAVIS, CA—Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA) held a district work day to highlight the expanded Child Tax Credit payments of up to $300 per month per child for working families that begin hitting bank accounts today, as well as other components of the American Rescue Plan COVID-19 relief law that are benefitting communities throughout his Congressional District.
48,600 hardworking households covering 86% of all children in California's 3rd Congressional District could get up to $300 per month per child July-December, and even more after filing their taxes next year.
- Nearly all hardworking families should get their monthly payments automatically beginning July 15th with no further action required.
- Families who did not file a tax return for 2019 or 2020 and who did not use the IRS Non-filers tool last year to sign up for the Economic Impact Payments, should go online and use the IRS Child Tax Credit Non-filer Sign-up Tool to sign up today.
To help spread the word in the community about this expanded benefit, Garamendi joined the Yolo Food Bank at their distribution site in Davis to talk to volunteers and recipients about the expanded Child Tax Credit payments for hardworking Americans. He then spoke about the benefit to parents of Head Start students at Valley Oak Elementary in Davis alongside Davis Joint Unified School District Superintendent John Bowes and Gail Nadal, Executive Director of Head Start Yolo County.
"Beginning today, nearly all working families in my Congressional District and throughout the country will receive monthly payments of $250 to $300 per child through the end of 2021," Garamendi said. "This investment in our children is part of the American Rescue Plan, and it will help set our children up for success and put money in the pockets of hardworking parents to pay for child care or cover other expenses to help fuel our economy. The expanded and improved Child Tax Credit payment is a historic change that is a lifeline to the middle-class and will cut child poverty in half in America," Garamendi continued.
Garamendi also spent the day hosting discussions and highlighting other key benefits and investments the American Rescue Plan makes in our community. At CommuniCare Health Center in Davis, Garamendi spoke with staff about the $32 million in new resources the American Rescue Plan generates for health centers throughout his Congressional District. This funding has helped local health centers administer COVID-19 vaccinations and deliver preventative care to vulnerable communities.
At Village Bakery and Zia's Delicatessen in Davis, Garamendi spoke with local business owners about how the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and the Restaurant Revitalization Fund programs that were created through the Cares Act and the American Rescue Plan have helped small businesses stay afloat throughout the pandemic. Both Zia's and Village Bakery received PPP funding to help them retain staff and cover expenses while they've weathered the storm throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
