Garamendi Criticizes Trump Administration’s Continued Raid of DoD Funding
Sacramento, CA—Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA), Chairman of the Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness, issued the following statement after the Trump Administration notified Congress that it will partially backfill military construction (MILCON) funds that it raided to pay for President Trump’s border wall by withdrawing additional funding from critical overseas projects.
“President Trump has consistently undermined our military’s readiness by gutting projects that are critically important to our national security to pay for his border wall. President Trump has already eliminated 128 crucial military construction projects at home and abroad to pay for his vanity wall. Now, the President is circumventing directives from Congress and further eroding the European Deterrence Initiative (EDI) to pay for these projects,” Garamendi said.
“We cannot rob Peter to pay Paul,” Garamendi continued. “The European Deterrence Initiative plays a critical role in preventing Russian aggression against our NATO allies. The President has already canceled vital EDI projects to pay for his wall, and further erosion of this program will embolden Russia and weaken the NATO alliance. These cuts will have significant and long-lasting impacts on our national security interests.”
“As America fights a historic global pandemic, our nation requires a whole-of-government approach to combat eradicate COVID-19 and lift stay-at-home orders. Sadly, the President’s obsession with his vanity wall will divert vital personnel and resources from the Army Corps of Engineers and Department of Defense that could be used to battle the coronavirus pandemic. I will continue to push back on these misguided and destructive actions by the President as Chairman of the Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness,” Garamendi concluded.
