Garamendi Announces Winners of Congressional High School Art Competition

May 20, 2024

VALLEJO, CA— Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA-08) announced the winners of this year's Congressional High School Art Competition at a ceremony in Vallejo.

The grand prize winner was Micaela Huang of Berkeley High School with her piece, "Me: A Gen-Z Girl." Micaela’s work will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for a year in a gallery featuring winners from Congressional Districts throughout the country.

Raven Guilas of Jesse Bethel High School, with her piece "Internet History," was the runner-up. Chelsey Greene of Buckingham Collegiate Charter Academy was the Solano County winner, and Iris Yu of Albany High School was the Contra Costa County winner.

The People’s Choice Award, which goes to the most liked photo of submissions on Facebook, was awarded to Natalia Perez of Early College High School for her piece, “Expectations Over Exhaustion.”

"Congratulations to Micaela Huang for winning this year's competition. She has a rare gift, and I hope she continues to follow her dreams. The competition was stiff, and there were many impressive pieces. I also want to congratulate the other artists we highlighted this year with special merit, including our runner-up, Raven Guilas of Jesse Bethel High School," Garamendi said.

"Every year, I'm amazed by the incredible talent and quality of art we receive for the Congressional High School Art Competition," Garamendi said.

"This competition is a team effort. Our panel of independent judges performed the tough task of narrowing down the winners. Teachers, parents, and mentors worked behind the scenes to offer encouragement, advice, and inspiration. And most importantly, these students knew they were artists and photographers with something important to say. Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's Congressional High School Art Competition," Garamendi concluded.

A gallery of every art piece is available here.
