Garamendi Announces $20 million U.S. Department of Transportation Grant for Highway 37 Improvements

April 5, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Representative John Garamendi (D-CA08) announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $20 million grant to begin rebuilding State Highway 37 to prevent coastal flooding in Solano, Napa, and Sonoma Counties. The federal grant awarded today is in response to a letter of support from Representatives Garamendi and Mike Thompson (D-CA04) sent in August 2023.

“This new federal funding will ensure that Highway 37, a critical evacuation and commuter route, remains open and uncongested. This funding will make it easier for Solano County residents to commute to and from Sonoma and Marin Counties and ultimately reach the Golden Gate Bridge. As a top Democrat on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, I fought hard to secure this federal funding from the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that I helped to enact. I continue working in Congress to bring home the federal funding needed to modernize and harden California’s infrastructure to climate change,” said Garamendi.

This $20 million grant to rebuild Highway 37 follows the more than $1 million in federal funding for the Tolay Creek Bridge Replacement and Restoration Project that Representatives Garamendi, Thompson, and Huffman secured last month.

This funding will reduce congestion and road closures on Highway 37 due to frequent flooding along on a 10.4-mile section by installing sheet pile walls, nature-based and engineered side slope reinforcement, and elevating the roadway at two critical segments. This is part of a comprehensive, regional project by the Counties and Caltrans to rebuild Highway 37 and reduce road closures due to flooding by reconnecting wetlands to the San Pablo Bay.
