Congressman John Garamendi’s Statement on President Trump’s Infrastructure Proposal
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, Davis, Yuba City, CA), a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, issued the following statement in response to the release of President Trump’s infrastructure plan:
“President Trump and Congressional Republicans chose to spend $1.5 trillion over the next ten years on tax cuts for the rich, and now our crumbling infrastructure will continue to pay the price.
President Trump’s infrastructure plan is woefully inadequate. The American Society of Civil Engineers estimates that we need a $2 trillion investment just to maintain a state of good repair for our current infrastructure, much less make improvements. But there is no new money in this plan. Instead, it simply repurposes existing transportation dollars into new, untested programs and block grants. Given the state of our infrastructure, this is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic and claiming it’s a plan to save the ship.
America needs robust direct federal investment that rebuilds our roads and bridges, upgrades our public transit, and invests in major flood control and public safety necessities. President Trump’s plan won’t accomplish these goals, but Democrats in Congress have proposed a plan that will do all of this, put millions of Americans back to work in the process. I am hopeful that Congress will consider these proposals and pass strong “Make It In America” transportation legislation that delivers for the American people.”
