FAIRFIELD — Armijo High student Fayola Fayusi was the grand prize winner in the annual Congressional High School Art Competition in the 3rd District.

Fayusi was recognized for her piece, "Heroes Like Me," and was one of 23 students recognized by Rep. John Garamendi, D-Walnut Grove.

"Every year, I'm always amazed by the incredible talent and quality of art we receive for the Congressional High School Art Competition," Garamendi said in a statement released by his office. "Congratulations to Fayola Fayusi, Alexandra Gionco and all of our county winners."

"This competition is a team effort. Our panel of independent judges performed the tough task of narrowing down the winners. Teachers, parents and mentors worked behind the scenes to offer encouragement, advice and inspiration. And most importantly, these students knew they were artists and photographers with something important to say. Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's Congressional High School Art Competition," Garamendi said in the statement.Gionco was the runner-up. She is a student at the Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts. The title of her piece is "Love Us Like You Love Our Food."

Fayusi's work will be featured at an exhibit at the U.S. Capitol for a year.

Recognized as the Solano County winner was Karla Verdin of Dixon, who attends Davis Senior High School. Her work was titled "Internal Vision."

There also were winners announced for Colusa, Lake, Sacramento, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba counties, as well as 13 other participants, 12 of whom are from Yuba or Sutter counties, and one from Yolo County.
