Garamendi’s Statement on Appointment of Former FBI Director Robert Mueller to Serve as Special Counsel in Russia Probe

May 17, 2017 Issues: Foreign Policy

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, Davis, Yuba City, CA), a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, today issued the following statement after Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to be the special counsel into the probe of Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and related matters:

“The appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller to serve as special counsel is very good news. He is widely respected and highly competent. But there’s another piece of the puzzle. The Russian government actively sought to influence our elections in 2016, and we should expect more of the same in 2018. While the special counsel and his team will probe any potential criminal violations, we need a separate public process to understand how we can protect our democracy from future meddling. An independent investigative body is still needed, and that’s why today I signed a discharge petition to compel the House of Representatives to vote for an independent investigation that is a step removed from partisan politics.”
