Congressman Garamendi’s Statement on President Trump’s Executive Order to Demand Review of Monument Designations

April 26, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC-Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA), former Deputy Secretary of the Interior, whose district includes the 330,000-acre Berryessa National Monument, issued the following statement on President Trump’s executive action ordering review of National Monument designations under the Antiquities Act:

“Our National Monuments preserve natural, cultural and historic public spaces throughout the United States and provide valuable recreational opportunities for all Americans to enjoy. President Trump’s Executive Order is a dangerous first step that could erode protections for our priceless public lands, diminish access and open them to destructive exploitation. I was proud to cosponsor legislation to establish the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Conservation Area prior to President Obama’s designation of the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. I strongly oppose this order and I will fight to preserve our National Monuments.”
