Congressman Garamendi’s Statement on “new” Senate Repeal Bill

Jul 14, 2017 Issues: Health Care

WASHINGTON, DC –Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, Davis, Yuba City, CA), who served as Insurance Commissioner of California for eight years, released the following statement in opposition to the new discussion draft of health care legislation in the Senate.

“This new Senate draft is no better than their first one, and maybe even worse,” said Garamendi. “This version of the bill keeps the same disastrous cuts to Medicaid that will take away health insurance for millions of Americans. And the new additions to the bill are even worse. Senator Cruz has added a section that allows insurers to offer plans exempt from the Affordable Care Act’s requirement to cover pre-existing conditions and benefits like maternity care. Here’s what will happen: young, healthy people will go into those plans, which will leave everyone else in even higher-cost plans. Their premiums and deductibles will skyrocket.”

“The new Senate bill is a very bad deal for everyone except the healthy and wealthy. Americans are rejecting legislation that takes healthcare away from themselves and millions of their fellow citizens.”
