Republicans in Congress Introduce Bill to Score Political Points
Instead of Resolve the Crisis

WALNUT GROVE, CA – Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, CA), a former Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Interior, issued the following statement on House Republicans’ introduction of H.R. 3964, an extreme bill that would create a water war, fail to solve the drought problem, and cause massive economic and ecological upheaval, affecting every water district in the state:

“The bill introduced by California Republicans is a political ploy in an election year that does nothing to solve the devastating drought facing the state. If enacted, the bill would overturn six decades of California state water and environmental law, tear up long standing contracts between the state, federal government, and water districts, and ignore the California Constitution’s public trust doctrine. This would create massive confusion and environmental damage to all California’s rivers, the Delta, and San Francisco Bay.

“This bill hurts Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike by threatening the livelihoods of farmers, fishermen, and small businesses throughout the state.

“We cannot throw away years of water management experience for the sake of scoring a few political points. More than ever, we must come together as a state to ensure Californians have water to drink, agricultural fields remain productive, and our natural resources are protected.”

Garamendi, who is a pear farmer and a cattle rancher, has proposed a “Water Plan for All of California” to increase the supply of water for the entire state through water storage, recycling, and conservation, using the best science, strengthening Delta levees, and respecting water rights.
