WASHINGTON, DC-Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA) introduced the "Fair COLA for Seniors Act of 2023" (H.R.716). This bill would require Social Security to use the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E) to calculate a fairer cost of living adjustment (COLA) for seniors.

This bill would require Social Security to use the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E) to calculate a fairer cost of living adjustment (COLA) for seniors. The bill would increase benefits and ensure that cost of living adjustments in Social Security reflect the real rising costs for seniors and disabled Americans.

The $1.4 trillion spending deal funds nearly aspect of the federal government and includes $25 million in long-sought funding for critical research into gun violence at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health.
