WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-Davis, Fairfield, Yuba City), a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, was appointed by his Congressional colleagues to four key Subcommittees on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure:

“We need to make forward-looking investments to upgrade California’s infrastructure to meet our state’s growing needs and address climate change,” said Garamendi. “These key subcommittee assignments are part of my mission in Congress to put Californians back to work rebuilding our state.”

“After more than two years of the Trump Administration’s false promises, I look forward to working with my Congressional colleagues to pass an infrastructure bill that provides the federal funding to advance California’s leadership in establishing a true green economy capable of creating good middle-class jobs,” said Garamendi.

Garamendi will serve as a senior Democratic member of each subcommittee to which he was appointed. An overview of Garamendi’s subcommittee assignments is included below:

  • Subcommittee on Highways and Transit
  • Responsible for the development of national highways, like State Route 70, and other surface transportation policies.
  • Implements highway and transit safety programs, research activities, and regulation of commercial motor vehicle operations.
  • Subcommittee on Water Resources and the Environment
  • Oversees matters related to water resources development, conservation and management, water pollution control, water infrastructure, and hazardous waste cleanup.
  • Authorizes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Civil Works), flood control projects—like the Marysville Ring Levee—and harbor maintenance and dredging projects like the Suisun Marina Dredging Project.
  • Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation
  • Authorizes the United States Coast Guard activities and oversees the commercial maritime industry that’s active in areas like Mare Island.
  • Garamendi previously served as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation.
  • Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management
  • Oversees federal management of emergencies and natural disasters, including Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) oversight and activities relating to disaster mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery for disasters like the fires in Lake and Yuba counties.
