WASHINGTON, DC – This week, Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, Davis, Yuba City, CA), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, held a hearing alongside Subcommittee Chairman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) on “Blue Technology” that could improve efficiency and mission performance for both the Coast Guard and other maritime stakeholders.

“This hearing was long overdue,” said Garamendi. “These emerging maritime technologies, which are already spurring substantial growth in the global ocean economy, have the potential to transform maritime infrastructure, information systems, and environmental stewardship for the Coast Guard and other maritime industries. Our allies and adversaries alike have been turning their attention to innovations in maritime technologies, and it is vital for the Coast Guard to fully understand the capabilities and complexities of these emerging systems.

“The Coast Guard has a vital role as the nation’s only multi-mission, military maritime law enforcement agency. Our Subcommittee will use what we learned today to ensure that the Coast Guard receives the support and directives it needs to take advantage of emerging Blue Technologies to accomplish its missions with maximum efficiency, safety, and environmental care.”
