Yuba River levee construction is included in federal legislation recently passed by the House of Representatives.
On Wednesday, the House voted to pass the Water Resources Development Act of 2018 and the bill included several provisions that Congressman John Garamendi of California’s 3rd District helped secure, according to a news release from his office.
Provisions in the bill will allow Army Corps of Engineers projects across the nation, including the construction of three miles of levee on the Yuba River, according to the press release.
“The Sacramento Valley is one of the most flood prone areas in the country,” Garamendi said. “My district has 782 miles of levees, providing flood protection for urban and rural communities alike, which is why this legislation is so important in the river.”
The provisions that Garamendi secured include language that will expedite the completion of a project that will provide greater flood protection for Woodland, language that will allow the construction of three miles of levee on the Yuba River in the Yuba Goldfields, reauthorization of the National Levee Safety initiative which provides funding to map non-federal levees across the nation and language that makes it easier for the Army Corps to construct more environmentally friendly setback levees.
