CommuniCare Health Centers breaks ground on construction of a new $9 million clinic facility in Woodland

February 11, 2013
WOODLAND, CA – CommuniCare Health Centers, a Federally Qualified Health Center located in Yolo County, broke ground today with a ceremony marking the start of construction on a new 21,000 square foot health center facility in Woodland, CA. The $9 million construction project has secured $5 million in federal grant funding awarded as part of the Affordable Care Act’s support for expansion of the nation’s community health centers. The project is a boon for the community that will expand access to care and increase services for Yolo County’s uninsured and underinsured residents, as well as create jobs.
The new health center site is located at 215 West Beamer Street in Woodland, and will provide an inviting, patient-centered medical home for the residents of Woodland and surrounding rural communities. Based upon CommuniCare’s projections, the new health center will provide capacity to increase access to care for 25% more patients above the total CommuniCare currently serves in Woodland. The finished facility is slated to open in January 2014.
“This new health center is essential for us to keep pace with the current and future needs for health care services in the community,” says CommuniCare CEO Robin Affrime. “It provides expanded space for us to increase medical, dental, and behavioral health services to serve the increasing number of families and individuals coming in for care.”
Joining in the ground breaking ceremony was Congressman John Garamendi of California’s 3rd congressional district in which the health center is being constructed and which also includes surrounding areas of Yolo, Colusa, Solano, Sacramento, Sutter, Yuba, Lake and Glenn counties. Congressman Garamendi, a former California state legislator and California’s Insurance Commissioner for eight years, is a strong supporter of community clinics and health centers serving the underserved.
“As a Federally Qualified Health Center, CommuniCare delivers vital health services to the people of Yolo County,” says Congressman Garamendi. “We are proud to see their excellence recognized with this $5 million capital improvement grant made possible by the Affordable Care Act. These funds mean more patients will be served in state-of-the-art facilities and more jobs will be created here in Yolo County.”
Also joining with ceremonial shovels were Woodland Mayor Skip Davies; chair of the Yolo County Board of Supervisors Duane Chamberlain; president of CommuniCare Health Centers’ Board of Directors Michael Golde; and Helen Thomson, a former Yolo County Supervisor who is a long-time supporter of health care for the underserved and an early champion of CommuniCare’s project to build the new Woodland health center.
