Congressman Garamendi Statement on Veterans Day
WALNUT GROVE, CA – Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, CA), who represents thousands of veterans as well as Travis and Beale Air Force bases in Congress, today issued the following statement in preparation for Veterans Day on Monday, November 11th:
“On Veterans Day, we honor everyone brave enough to don the uniform. Those willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for our nation deserve our respect and our praise, and they should expect nothing less than a grateful country ready to give back.
“I’ve met with hundreds of veterans in the 3rd District, and while every story is different in its own way, too many stories are the same. Too many of our veterans are suffering from physical injuries and unable to get a prompt response from the Veterans Administration to address their ailments due to the VA claims backlog, which has been reduced but not nearly fast enough. Many other veterans are suffering in silence with mental health issues like post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), unable or unwilling to seek the treatment they deserve. Too many veterans, men and women who have witnessed the unspeakable, have fallen into mental illness or substance abuse, winding up on our streets. Too many recent veterans, returning from Afghanistan and Iraq, have been unable to readjust and find a good job in civilian life.
“On Veterans Day, I’ll attend five ceremonies and salute our men and women in uniform while embracing veterans and their families. But when I return to Washington the next day, my focus will remain on making sure our veterans get the best possible services from their government. Our veterans deserve nothing less than the best. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all who served.”
